Today’s acrobatic and gymnastics movements such as jumps, turns, flips and other demanding aerial techniques have borrowed techniques from the classical Chinese dance from one way or the other since the classical Chinese dance has been widely spread for thousands of years in the history. How about the movements of cheerleading? After seeing the "Handkerchiefs" performance by Shen Yun, I began to wonder was there a relationship between the origins of cheerleading to the classical Chinese dance.
The movement of turning handkerchiefs really resembles where cheerleading holding pompoms, except turning the handkerchief facing you with one hand takes a lot of training and it is a challenge movement. The entire handkerchief performance is vivacious with cheerful music and colorful costumes, which signals the spring time is here. The cheerful formation is also resembled to the cheerful mood of the cheerleading, but the cheerleading looks more like a simplified version compared to how Shen Yun performed. You need to watch it yourself to know what I meant.
