Chinese New Year Celebrated with Shen Yun in Los Angeles

People were literally rushed in to see the last show of Shen Yun performance in Los Angeles. There were no seats except to open more seats in the upper levels. The tickets were completely sold out. People were been recommended by their friends and relatives who had seen the performance in the past days. People use all kinds of words to describe what it's like to see Shen Yun, but there is no one word can describe it. The excitement does not end here in Los Angeles, there is another Shen Yun Performing Arts tour company is just opened its first show in the first day of Chinese New Year at Radio City Music Hall in New York on Febuary 13, 2010. Handkerchiefs – The Origin of Cheerleading?

Today’s acrobatic and gymnastics movements such as jumps, turns, flips and other demanding aerial techniques have borrowed techniques from the classical Chinese dance from one way or the other since the classical Chinese dance has been widely spread for thousands of years in the history. How about the movements of cheerleading? After seeing the "Handkerchiefs" performance by Shen Yun, I began to wonder was there a relationship between the origins of cheerleading to the classical Chinese dance.

The movement of turning handkerchiefs really resembles where cheerleading holding pompoms, except turning the handkerchief facing you with one hand takes a lot of training and it is a challenge movement. The entire handkerchief performance is vivacious with cheerful music and colorful costumes, which signals the spring time is here. The cheerful formation is also resembled to the cheerful mood of the cheerleading, but the cheerleading looks more like a simplified version compared to how Shen Yun performed. You need to watch it yourself to know what I meant.

Shen Yun Is amazing

A Night at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion

It is a legendary night accompanies with Shen Yun Performance Arts at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA Music Center. You may or may not know a traditional Chinese musical instrument called er-hu (二胡). It is a two-stringed bowed musical instrument.

In Shen Yun, there is an amazing erhu soloist called Xiaochun Qi. There is no other erhu soloist can compare to how she plays erhu on the stage. Tonight, she played “Saving the Predestined” which also composed by herself. As she begins to play the first tone, the audience is silent and time seems to be frozen. Magically, her music connects with everyone in the audience and the movements of strings tell stories. I could feel my heart as if my long forgotten memories and feelings are bringing back from time piece by piece as she moves her strings back and forth. Those feelings were hidden and buried for so long and they felt like eons have been passed. In her music, I felt that she is telling us stories that we all being through but forgotten in some lifetimes. It contained the time of glory, the time of sorrow, and the time of triumphs we shared long long time ago. It is truly amazing to watch her live performance as I wonder how two strings can do so much. I sincerely invite you to experience Shen Yun.

What other people say about Xiaochun Qi's performance?

Architects Amazed by Shen Yun
The erhu player, Xiaochun Qi, played “Saving the Predestined.” Mr. Sandoval was particularly moved by the performance. He said: “I've heard it and seen others play. I've never heard it played so beautifully.

Ms. Lau said, “Her heart sang along.”

"One of the things I loved was the erhu," he said.   The erhu is a two-stringed bowed Chinese instrument held on the lap of the player. When played slowly, it has a somewhat mournful sound. “The Chinese erhu was so moving. It went right into my heart every time it played, especially on the stage," he said.

Bank Vice-President: 'I never heard so much beautiful music before'

"I think it is marvelous, I especially like the Chinese instrument, the erhu. I never heard so much beautiful music before," she said, commenting on the instrumental piece, Saving the Predestined, performed by erhu virtuoso Xiaochun Qi.  "The performance is really great ... My friends came here for the first time and really had a good time. It is very well done—the cast members and the costumes and the whole [production]… there is a lot of different meaning in it."

Shen Yun Performance. WOW and Enjoy.

The Shen Yun performance was truly amazing and enjoyable throughout every show. When I was watching the performance, I’ve really forgotten where I was as if I was transcending to another world. I have noticed the use of color in their costumes was totally out of this world. If you have experienced in any forms of arts, you probably are more aware of some rules about how to use color to express feeling and what color to complement one color to another. Shen Yun has redefined all these rules about colors. Just by looking at the use of color itself, it is well balanced and harmonized with the movement. The colors really add up another dimension of expression and it is a pleasure to the eyes that I have never felt that way before.

Have you ever had a feeling that you feel very eager to share with your love ones? It’s like you just want to pick up the phone and call someone to share your feeling right away. When I was sitting inside and watching the Shen Yun performance, I felt like I just want to go out and tell everyone to come in to watch the show. It was just awesome and WOW.

The formation of dances, the use of color and the themes of stories can really send out powerful messages about the world where values are very essential to us and how we can learn to live by with these values that have been forgotten after millenniums of human generations.

Ancient Chinese Culture Comes to Live through the Shen Yun Performing Arts

The richness in the traditional Chinese culture is what fascinating us the most. Its philosophies and its uniqueness of the culture in a long history have made it distinct from the western world. Although the Chinese culture is made up of many dynasties, the Tang dynasty is the best dynasty to represent what the traditional Chinese culture is and since it was at a golden era for the ancient Chinese civilization as it reached its apex both in its cultural development and technological advancement.

The Chinese people believe that their culture was not evolved or created by the people, but rather it was created by a divine source called Shen in Chinese. It has been passed down from generation to generation. All its ways of life and science are derived in some forms of divine or from Heaven. In ancient China, the Chinese called its land as the Land of the Divine or Shen Zhou.

The word "culture" is not merely a category of interests we often used in the modern days but rather it is what defines all of us. It is passed down from generations through various forms. Most noticeably are the language we spoke and the writing we use to record our lives. It is deeply rooted in our languages that same words from different culture may have totally different connotations in its meaning. Due to the linguistic limitation, a culture has been expressed and passed down by arts. Especially for ancient Chinese art, it has been expressed from simple household pottery to Imperial dance and opera. It was in this type of form, a culture is able to be preserved and continued.

The traditional Chinese culture is deteriorating rapidly especially in the last 60 years. This is mainly not due to modernization, but it was systematically destroyed by the communist regime in China. From the replacement of traditional writing to simplified (non-logical) writing, it has lost its cultural meaning within each character. Under its ruling, it turned divine loving people into atheists. Destroying traditional philosophies both the Confucianism and Taoism, and replacing them with horrible communism. Sadly, in the present time, the essence of traditional Chinese could hardly be found in the mainland China. But fortunately, there are many traditions still being kept by the overseas Chinese people.

The Shen Yun Performing Arts, a New York based performing group, is truly a god send from divine. Its mission is to restore the essence of the traditional Chinese arts through the most fundamental but profound form of arts. From its simple gestures to magnificent color on the Tang customs, every moment, every show brings back the tradition piece by piece. There is nothing to translate since its dance performances transcend its divine message and convey deeper meaning that all human beings share across the culture and time. It is a truly a Chinese Renaissance. Touring 220 cities globally and it is absolutely no language or culture barrier, and many have learned to appreciate the true ancient Chinese culture. Have you watched it? Check out for the tour near you.
